When I show you my shopping, I like to be able to do something with it within a few days or else it’s squirreled away and soon forgotten, and all the initial excitement of a brilliant shopping find gets lost!
So, this is what I’ve come up with using the £2 Primark bird brooch I found. After a bit of of thinking I decided to try and cover it with Decopatch paper, which worked pretty well …
Then, my next idea was to cover it with Utee, but in my haste, I didn’t bother to read the instructions properly and the results were very uneven, lumpy and disappointing, which is not surprising really!
However, with a bit of picking, I was able to remove all the layers …. and start again, this time covering the paper with Ranger Glossy Accents. It’s not perfect … but that adds to its quirkiness. I have also added a small yellowy flat backed gem for the eye as the Accents was drying.. All in all I am pretty chuffed with how it’s turned out second time around and I shall be wearing it.
Great result Helen.

Great job! Working with UTEE is a bit frustrating until you stop thinking of it as "embossing powder". Because the powder is chunky compared to the fine powder used for embossing stamped images the first two coats can really get you stumped and disappointed. The trick is to use at least three coats. Once you've covered your piece the first time, while it is still soft, dip it into the UTEE a second time and get the powder all over. Then, after melting it the second time, do this a third time. With each coating and melting it gets more even, leaving a look as if the piece has been coated in glass. Try it out on a simple circle punched out of a colorful magazine picture- you'll see what I mean. When working with flat items (like paper) you can also pat the piece onto a watermark pad before applying the powder. Please do be very carefull. UTEE is very hot and can really burn!
ReplyDeleteI recently UTEE'd a CD for a DT project - I gave it 3 coats but did not come out like glass :-( but was pleased with 'textured' finish. I think my problem was I faffed so much UTEE was no longer 'soft' when adding next layer of UTEE powder - Great tip of using watermark pad.

Thats Beautiful! Yep, I bought one of these birds too months ago, and put it away, forgotten about, (along with other Primark jewellery goodies), until I saw your post yesterday. Now for the life of me, I cant find it! :(
