Christmas Stash Busting ……. of a not very satisfying type nature!
This is an idea I have seen on Pinterest so many times before but never tried, but since I had bought a bag of around 100 mini pegs for silly money in a local charity a while back, I no longer had an excuse.
However, I am going to say this right from the start, I am not very enamoured by the finished results!
I started by breaking up the 35mm long pegs, putting the metal fastenings aside as I have also seen pendants and bracelets made using them (?????)
I then glued two peg pieces together back to back, which was the easy part……. but putting eight points together to make a rough snowflake shape was much more fiddly, as there wasn’t an awful lot of surface to stick anything to, however I used E-7000 and allowed them to dry thoroughly overnight, which worked in the end, but then they weren’t exactly symmetrical, which for someone as craftily anal as me, annoyed the hell out of me!
It also has to be said that I didn’t much enjoy painting the snowflakes, using a white, emulsion Wilko tester pot, being far too fiddly, especially as I wasn’t really sure if my efforts would be worth my while, as the idea and making them was really out of my comfort zone.
Still unsure of what I was actually doing, I added a dusting of translucent, ultra fine glitter between the two coats of vanish.
Still ploughing on, I put small screw eye hook one of the snowflake points so they could be hung ………
……. before adding a two smaller snowflake layers on both sides, by this stage I knew they were an absolute dogs breakfast ……..
……. that couldn’t even be rescued by the addition of silver, flat back gems, which I didn’t even follow through after the first one! Yuk!
They are just little too on the rustic/crude side for me, from the roughness of the wood to the haphazard paint job……. originally I thought of using them as tag charms on presents, but I think I will simply hang them wherever I fancy on the odd tree branch on the walk to and from school during December. They are really not me!
